Safety Tips for Preventing Injuries on the Job

From the improper use of equipment to inadequate job training and fatigue, 6 million Americans suffer from non-fatal injuries in the workplace each year. And, according to the National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, around 6,000 employees die from workplace injuries. Generally, workplace injuries are caused by unsafe work practices, hazardous conditions, or exposure to harmful chemicals that were improperly stored.

To prevent workplace injuries, it is crucial that businesses create a safer work environment. You may not always be able to anticipate every accident before it occurs, but knowing some workplace safety tips is the first step in prevention. Here are some important safety tips for preventing injuries on the job at your business:

Be Aware of Potential Hazards

If you notice office or shop equipment improperly stored, are unsure about how to perform some aspect of your job or how to use a particular piece of equipment, or spot a dangerous scenario waiting to happen, you need to make your employer and co-workers aware of the situation.

When a potential hazard is discovered, accidents can be prevented by making everyone else in your workplace aware of the danger. Also, notify your supervisor and file any reports regarding the potential hazard. Making everyone aware of a potential hazard is an excellent measure for preventing injuries.

Use Proper Equipment

The equipment that you use on the job should have a regular maintenance schedule. All equipment and power tools should be properly maintained with the manufacturers’ guards in place. If you use chemicals, remember to have safety glasses, goggles, gloves, and aprons.

Instructions regarding how to respond to chemical spills should be prominently displayed anywhere chemicals are used and all chemicals should have warning labels. Alert your supervisor if you notice a lack of proper ventilation, lighting, or safety gear.

Get Plenty of Sleep

If your job requires great concentration or a quick response, fatigue puts you at risk for an accident. It has been estimated that workers' tiredness is the main cause for 18% of all accidents and injuries that occur in the workplace.

If you work the third shift, you are fighting your natural clock by trying to stay awake at night and get the proper amount of sleep during the day. Try to get 7-8 hours of sleep during the day and make an effort to follow the same sleep schedule each day.

Avoid Repetitive Stress and Strain

One of the most significant causes of workplace injuries is repetitive stress or strain. If your job requires you to remain in a chair for long periods of time, make sure to stand up and stretch throughout the day. Maintain proper posture by having materials, tools, and equipment in a comfortable range from your body.

If your job requires a constant typing, remember to take frequent breaks. Carpal tunnel syndrome often results from the repetitive stress of computer keyboard work, assembly line work, or factory work. Taking sufficient breaks throughout the day will help prevent injuries that are caused by repetitive motion.
